Web Quest Project

We are working on a Web Quest in class titled “I Never Saw Another Butterfly.”  It is based on a poem written by Pavel Friedman on June 4, 1942, during his internment at the concentration camp in Terezin.  Terezin is located in modern Czech Republic, but the kids will hear me use the historical name of the country, Czechoslovakia.  I sent an email to the parent accounts I have on file earlier today.  The butterfly journal will be due on Friday, March 4, 2011.  They must go through the pages and complete the activities as they journey to see the experiences of the children of Terezin.

Progress Reports for Fourth Interim Marking Period

Progress reports went home today.  The six weeks’ marking period ends on Friday, February 25.  If your grade is below a 70, then you need to visit your teacher(s), and you need to work on bringing that mark up to an acceptable rating for the end of the grading period!  We are available most mornings for tutorials and often in the afternoons as well.  Please check our schedules, and come in ready to work hard.  I am in every morning except when I have a meeting like tomorrow morning or a faculty meeting like last Friday.

Test and Quiz This Week

We are having our parts of speech test on Thursday.  You will need either a pen or pencil for the test.  Bring your SSR book to read after you finish if you are in my regular class.  Pre-AP students will need to bring their Walk Two Moons books to class each day this week.

On Friday, we are having a DOL quiz.  Here is an example of what to expect.  Choose the correctly punctuated sentence out of the following.

A.  Phyllis and i went to see Monsters vs. Aliens.

B.  Phyllis and I went to see “Monsters vs. Aliens.”

C.  Phyllis and I went to see Monsters vs. Aliens.

D.  Phyllis and I went two see “Monsters vs. Aliens.”

The correct answer is “C” because a movie title is underlined.  The titles of poems, short stories, and songs are enclosed in quotation marks.  Please check the reference page for my handout called Title Tamers.  I have also alphabetized my files on my reference page, but the majority of what you need will be there.

Day Four of the Winter’s Grip

What type of figurative language did I use in the title of this post?*  We will review the parts of speech as we review for the test which will take place next week.  I want you to stay safe if you must travel outside, dear ones.  Continue to post your ideas on the previous post titled “Writing Time!”  Perhaps you’ll find an idea that you’ve not already considered.  When I said on Monday that I would see you next month, I had no idea how long it would be before I saw my students again.    I am ready to see you again; I think that caution is wise considering that the temperatures will not get above freezing until Saturday.  I am praying for sunshine to melt the ice, too.  I hope to see you on Monday!
