Double-entry Journals

Students are being asked to record their questions, impressions, and opinions as we read Holes by Louis Sachar.  Here is the breakdown of journal entries so far.  Some students write down words and phrases they find interesting; some record figurative language and/or literary devices.  There is some information on the class calendar to the right of this blog entry.

Chapters 1-5: Write two journal entries.

Chapters 6-12: Write six journal entries.

Chapters 13-16: Write three journal entries.

P. S. Here are my “Streak Into Spring” totals: March 17 -38 minutes , March 18 – 49 minutes , March 19- 15 minutes

Oops!

Dear Ones,

I really meant to keep up the spring break journal challenge of 2012, but I spent time reading, relaxing, and doing a couple of small blog entries as my writing.  I beg your pardon since I meant to give several topics and post my own responses.  If you took your journal home, bring it back, and we’ll use it tomorrow in class.  Know that you are precious and priceless, and there is no one exactly like you.  The LORD made you unique, and He made you for a purpose that is as yet unseen.  Take care, and get a good night’s rest.  I will see you tomorrow.

Summer Jounal # 3 – Mrs. J’s Response

Years ago, we had an ice cream store called Swensen’s in Plano.  They featured a menu item called an “Earthquake” that contained eight scoops of ice cream and eight toppings.  What would be on your Earthquake?

Chocolate with vanilla syrup, vanilla with peppermint syrup,  chocolate chip with chocolate syrup, jamocha almond fudge with coffee syrup, mint chocolate chip with hot fudge, strawberry ice cream with strawberry syrup, licorice ice cream with raspberry syrup, and peanut butter ice cream with chocolate syrup.  I just really like my chocolate syrup and don’t want caramel.  🙂

Summer Journal # 2 — Mrs. J’s Response

Where is one of best places you’ve visited for  vacation?  It can be here in the United States or somewhere else in the world.  Tell me about it, and I’ll write about mine, too.  Take care, and God bless!

My husband and I traveled to beautiful and delightfully cool Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada for our honeymoon.  The trees in Stanley Park dwarfed us as we drove around looking at the beautiful flora and fauna around the park and at Queen Elizabeth’s Garden.  I loved visiting the Vancouver Aquarium and seeing Finna the killer whale through the glass.  He eyed me with the same curiosity I had about him.  The Native American-themed sculpture of a whale was beautiful as it stood at the front of the aquarium entrance.  I remember it because I had been raised in southern California and wasn’t accustomed to some of the northern Native American art.  It was delightful.

Summer Journal # 1 – Mrs. J’s Response

Think about foods  you love to eat during the summer months.  You know I love food, so I thought I’d start there.  I’ll post my response in a day or two.  You are welcome to leave comments and/or jot ideas in your journal.

In the summer months, I love eating corn on the cob that’s been boiled on the stove top or grilled in aluminum foil.  I also love roasted vegetables including yellow squash, zucchini, and potatoes.  My third favorite summer time food would be snowcones.  I love to mix cherry and grape flavors together.  That is my all-time favorite at the Snow Cone Lady.  I’ve been hearing about Hula Island at College Parkway and Coit, so I will have to make a trek in a few days and take my family with me.  Check in a couple of days and find a new journal topic.  Take care.
