STAAR Week, 2018

Bring your lunch, snacks in a sandwich-sized baggie, library book, pencils, and a highlighter for the STAAR on Monday and Tuesday. Don’t wear a SmartWatch or bring your mobile to the testing classroom. Eat a good breakfast with some protein in it (bacon ❤️, milk, cheese, yogurt, or peanut butter). Get some sleep on Sunday and Monday nights. I believe in you. Be amazing!

Culture Quilt Coming Soon

We are beginning a neat little project to wrap up our study of Afghanistan’s culture under the Taliban. We just finished reading Deborah Ellis’ book The Breadwinner which told the tale of Parvana a young girl of eleven and what she must do to help her family survive. It is the first book in the triology.

Holes Novel Test Retakes/Vocabulary Quiz

If you scored below an 85 percent on the Holes test we took on May 1, then you will want to attend the retake session on Monday, May 19, at 3:40 P.M. in my room.  Bring a snack if you need it, and get your test and/or answer sheet signed by a parent/guardian.

On Friday, May 23, we will have a vocabulary quiz that covers the vocabulary packet we did a while back.  Here is a link to some flashcards I created for study purposes.  Review them over the next few days.

See You on Monday!

We are back to work on Monday, January 6, 2014.  Bring your Springboard workbook, and a pen or pencil to class.  We will visit the library on Tuesday, January 7, so have your books ready.  We are visiting the integration lab to do some more I-Station work on Friday, January 10.

Our next novel of study is Holes by Louis Sachar.  We teach it in connection with Springboard.  Please bring your copy to school on or before Monday, February 3, 2014.  Start going to bed on time tonight in order to be less groggy on Monday at school. Take care, and God bless!

Class Notes – September 16, 2013

We worked on the attached memory map assignment in class today.  Students were asked to brainstorm about an incident in their lives that caused them to change; in other words, they realized, discovered, or learned something new as a result.  I had them look at their life maps to choose an incident, we created a graphic organizer about the word incident, and then I had them brainstorm about the events that occurred at the beginning, middle, and end of the incident.  Some great ideas they could use include:  divorce and remarriage, move to a new location from familiar surroundings, a new pet and the challenges it presents, death of a pet who was a long-time family member, overcoming some significant health issue, testing for a black belt in martial arts, etc.  This is not the time to discuss a trip to Disneyland, Sea World, or even Six Flags because the trip does not bring about a change in the student’s life.  We can write about a favorite vacation spot another day in our journals.  This assignment will eventually become a personal narrative that they will write about how this incident changed them.

Supplies needed tomorrow include:  colored pencils and/or markers, pen, pencil, Springboard workbook with pages 16-17 completed.

They will have to include dialogue, commentary (explaining importance of the event), and a sentence that details the event in their completed memory map.  We will work on this in class tomorrow after the quiz.  My ILA classes will take a quiz over the first four chapters of Where the Red Fern Grows and IVAN CAPP.  My PAP ILA class will take a quiz over IVAN CAPP.  Please check your inbox for an email sent at the end of the school day, and let me know if you need to be added to my mailing list to receive my emails.
