Welcome Email and Remind

Today I sent an email welcoming parents to my class for the 2015-2016 school year. Students were to work on the rough draft of their introduction letters. Those rough drafts are due tomorrow. Please don’t worry about how long each paragraph is; make sure you have the right content.  See the attachment below for the directions. Please email me if there are errors on the email address preferred for contact from me at school.  If your student is confused, please send him or her to me in the morning with a pass in the passport section of their student planner.

Have a great Wednesday evening.

Personification/Hyperbole Cartoon

I look forward to seeing my students’ creativity unleashed with the personification/hyperbole cartoons.  They will make four (4) total drawings with two for personification and two for hyperbole.  Yes, the illustrations need to be in color.  Yes, they need to write the example on their artwork.  I wanted them to play with language in the same manner as an author and to see how we use figurative language to express ourselves.

Here is an example:  The run down house appeared depressed.

  • Figurative – draw a house with a face and sad expression.
  • Literal – draw an abandoned-looking house with a for sale sign in front of it.

Character Journals

will be collecting character/figurative language journals on Monday, September 23.  I am the ILA teacher on-deck in tutorials on Monday mornings, so that is the last time to catch up before the day begins.  Enjoy your weekend.

Add More Books to the List!

I have read about six books over the spring break holiday this year, and I have two days left!  I was at the Frisco Public Library briefly this afternoon to pick up three books because my stack was growing too small.  Mama is happy now.  When you see me reading one of my SSR books on Monday, join me for some words of art!

By the way, I sprayed those recalcitrant weeds this morning.  I hope they die a wretched, painful death.  Henbit and dandelions insidiously grow in my poor lawn as I encourage the grass to come alive again in time for spring.  We will see how things progress.

Expository Writing Assignment About Success

Class Notes – October 12, 2011

On-level English has a DOL quiz on Friday, October 14.  We will be in the computer integration lab typing the final copies of their short stories on Monday, October 17.  If the story is longer than a couple of typed pages, then they need to bring a flash/zip drive to school on Monday and save their work to finish at home.  It is due on Wednesday, October 19.  Their papers will be in Times New Roman 12-point font with double-spaced lines and one-inch margins in black ink.

===================================================================================================

PAP English has their short stories due on Friday, October 14.  They are to be typed double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman font with a one-inch margin.  I emailed a template home yesterday for Microsoft Word 2003 and 2007.  Ask your parents (nicely!) if they’ll share that with you and let you type like mad on your computer at home.  Use your spellchecker feature to help you, and ask a family member to read it once or twice before you turn it in to me.

Remember, if your home printer is out of ink or dead, then you are to use a flash drive to bring it up to school and print it in the Integration lab before or after school.  Emailing Mrs. J the paper is not an option.  I have no access to GoogleDocs, so we are doing things the old-fashioned way.  I hope this helps.  Take care, and I’ll see you in class tomorrow!
