Stay Organized!

We will be organizing our binders for world cultures. I have the link of how it should look attached to the class calendar you see on the right hand side of my blog page. Please write your name on your notebook (binder) in the event that I find it in the hallway, I can return it to you.

Binders will be kept in students’ lockers. Students will be expected to bring their binders to class each day unless specifically directed not to do so. The binders will contain the BOK (Book of Knowledge) that has the bulk of notes and information needed for academic success in world cultures. I have a few extra copies during this first unit. Once the Learning Hub is active, students will have to print the BOK if the first copy is lost. Thank you for understanding.

Grammar Gurus

It is my intention to work on grammar along with literature circles during the last few weeks of the school year. Expect to work the logical side of the brain as we look at sentence structure, functions of sentences, etc. Parents, you may get a refresher course as I endeavor to make my final efforts of preparation for seventh grade language arts. Hold on to your hats!

P. S. It is my hope that they will be grammar gurus as a result. 🙂

End of the Semester

This Friday is the last day of the first semester for 2015-2016. If you owe any work for your core classes, please visit tutorials this week before or after school to take care of any missing work. We want you to be successful! I’ve posted some of the original poems written by students this year outside of my classroom door. Please be sure to enjoy your fellow students’ words of art.

Cougar Camp 2015

Yesterday found me completing my eleventh Cougar Camp orientation for my incoming sixth graders. Here are a couple of snapshots before my students arrived. I look forward to working with them through this school year.

I went through a presentation introducing myself to the students. The QR codes you see on the bulletin board will remain through the first few days of school for communication set up purposes. It was lovely to see some former students who are now NJHS members helping the new students navigate the hallways.

Writing Work Time

We have worked on expository writing this week with our character analysis essay about Stanley Yelnats in Louis Sachar’s Holes.  Monday will find us revising and editing our rough drafts that I have in my room for safekeeping.  Enjoy your Mother’s Day weekend, especially if you must brave the rain we’ve been promised. Remember to be kind, and do good to one another.

P. S. The nice folks at Edublogs insisted that I change my background from the picture seen below to this rad chalkboard design. I’ve taught for long enough that I remember having chalkboards in my classroom.  I miss my chalkboard.

Literature Circles

Next week we begin literature circles in my PAP and ILA classes. I look forward to sharing some new-to-them stories with my students.  We’ve worked hard on STAAR preparation as we read The Phantom Tollbooth—the novel and drama adaptation—before we viewed the animated film by Warner Brothers.  Stay tuned for more news.
