Reading Aplenty! Reading Galore!

Students are reading lots of fiction and nonfiction and participating in small group discussions for the last weeks of school. Grades will be taken for active participation. We have also been working on writing creative responses to journals. Some of the topics I select are a little wacky. Some are insightful. Ask your student about some of them. Finish the course strongly, students! Please fly your U.S. flags tomorrow, Saturday, May 21, to honor the men and women who guarantee our freedoms. It’s called Armed Forces Day.

Summer Reading Project – Completed!

I finished J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series about ten days ago. It was well-written, and the story was quite engaging. If you love a good story that takes a while to read over the entire seven-book series, then this is one to try. I’ve heard that the films are good, too; however, I prefer to use my own vivid imagination for some of the action sequences. More anon.

Summer Reading Project

I am in the process of reading the Harry Potter series so many of my bookworms have devoured. Ms. Rowling does deliver a good yard. I am tired of Draco Malfoy’s vendetta against Harry and any of Harry’s friends and await his comeuppance. I started reading during the first week of summer holiday and am now one-tenth of the way through the fourth installment, Goblet of Fire. I will keep updates on my progress.  More anon.

New Unit for Springboard

We will begin working on Unit II of our Springboard workbooks this week.  Our efforts will culminate in an original short story, but we’ll read some published examples and practice writing descriptively.  Here are a few of Aesop’s fables to read.  Please do this before Monday, November 17, 2014, just to have more background material in your arsenal.  Have fun!

Weekend Class Update

We will have a test on Friday, September 26, and a review will be forthcoming.  Your metaphor poems are due on Monday, September 22.  Be ready for a figurative language smackdown. I didn’t have enough order forms for all of my students, unfortunately, but I maintain a class on Scholastic Reading Club.  Check the link on the “fun stuff” tab on the right side of the blog.  Make it a great weekend!
