Grading All-Nighter

I’m reading all sorts of writing this weekend and learning about my students in the process.  I teach some cool kids and am privileged to work with them this year.  We will have a six weeks’ test on Friday, October 28, 2011, in both my on-level and Pre-AP English classes.  We will review and begin some new concepts next week, so be ready.  PAP has a reading quiz over chapters 17-21 of Fever 1793 on Monday.  If you remember that you left your novel at school this weekend, you may have to visit tutorials on Monday morning to finish up.  I’m on duty in the cafeteria, so you may have to ask Mrs. Willis if you can sit in her classroom or go to the library and read there.  Take care, and God bless!

Class Notes – October 12, 2011

On-level English has a DOL quiz on Friday, October 14.  We will be in the computer integration lab typing the final copies of their short stories on Monday, October 17.  If the story is longer than a couple of typed pages, then they need to bring a flash/zip drive to school on Monday and save their work to finish at home.  It is due on Wednesday, October 19.  Their papers will be in Times New Roman 12-point font with double-spaced lines and one-inch margins in black ink.

===================================================================================================

PAP English has their short stories due on Friday, October 14.  They are to be typed double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman font with a one-inch margin.  I emailed a template home yesterday for Microsoft Word 2003 and 2007.  Ask your parents (nicely!) if they’ll share that with you and let you type like mad on your computer at home.  Use your spellchecker feature to help you, and ask a family member to read it once or twice before you turn it in to me.

Remember, if your home printer is out of ink or dead, then you are to use a flash drive to bring it up to school and print it in the Integration lab before or after school.  Emailing Mrs. J the paper is not an option.  I have no access to GoogleDocs, so we are doing things the old-fashioned way.  I hope this helps.  Take care, and I’ll see you in class tomorrow!

Student-Led Conferences Video

Student-led conferences will take place on Monday, October 10, 2011.  Here is a video clip I showed the students in my classes on Thursday, October 6, 2011.  While the students seen are in the seventh grade, the same principles apply.  I hope this is helpful to you.  Please take care, and God bless!

Updates – PAP

We are using the SpringBoard workbook in PAP English, so students will be asked to do some writing, thinking, and reading.  Right now, the suggested independent read is any novels based on Greek myths or a collection of myths.  The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan is an excellent choice.   D’Aulaire’s Book of Greek Myths is the myth collection I read in sixth grade that got me hooked on the ancient Greeks.

We will be writing a short story in PAP English and are currently laying the groundwork before we begin the writing process.

**Bring your copy of Fever 1793 to class on Wednesday, October 5th!**
