Still Relaxing

We are mid-July, and I am still in relaxation mode. I am still sleeping in for me, and I’ve just started back to walking three times a week. During the school year, I usually am better about it. I’ve read over forty books this year and plan to read at least fifty before December 31, 2017. I’ll let you know my final total when that happens. Until later.

P. S. I will be emptying my Remind class World Cultures before the first day of school, so if you’re currently subscribed, you can reply @LEAVE to exit the thread. Take care, and God bless.

Cookies!

Dear Students,

I mixed up the dough for sugar cookies. It now chills in my refrigerator so that rolling them out will be easier. This is a recipe that my mama uses, so it is not easily passed on to young bakers. Ask your mom or grandma for her recipe. If you must use a store-bought dough, that’s okay too. Just roll the edges in colored sugar crystals to make them a bit more special. Happy baking!

Getting Ready

Classroom Rules

This photograph represents a small portion of the work I have completed over the last two days preparing my new classroom for Cougar Camp next Wednesday. I wanted a bright, eye-catching sign that could not be ignored. I want to be clear about my expectations for my students. I am excited about this opportunity to work with geography and world cultures this school year.

Late Summer Check-In

I have a two-day workshop to attend this week. Until then, I am still reading thick novels, taking naps, and eating ice cream when possible. We bought Breyer’s Cookies and Cream on Saturday morning; on Saturday evening, I headed back to the store for a package of Oreos. Food is good.

Welcome Email and Remind

Today I sent an email welcoming parents to my class for the 2015-2016 school year. Students were to work on the rough draft of their introduction letters. Those rough drafts are due tomorrow. Please don’t worry about how long each paragraph is; make sure you have the right content.  See the attachment below for the directions. Please email me if there are errors on the email address preferred for contact from me at school.  If your student is confused, please send him or her to me in the morning with a pass in the passport section of their student planner.

Have a great Wednesday evening.

Introduction Letter

Early Rumblings

I finally went to school on August 5 to work in my classroom. I wound up taking care of a few minor items to be ready for Cougar Camp 2015 that takes place on Friday, August 14. So far, I’ve read over forty books during this year, and I plan to reach at least sixty if possible. Remember to be kind, and do good deeds to one another.

Summer Reading Project – Completed!

I finished J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series about ten days ago. It was well-written, and the story was quite engaging. If you love a good story that takes a while to read over the entire seven-book series, then this is one to try. I’ve heard that the films are good, too; however, I prefer to use my own vivid imagination for some of the action sequences. More anon.

Summer Reading Project

I am in the process of reading the Harry Potter series so many of my bookworms have devoured. Ms. Rowling does deliver a good yard. I am tired of Draco Malfoy’s vendetta against Harry and any of Harry’s friends and await his comeuppance. I started reading during the first week of summer holiday and am now one-tenth of the way through the fourth installment, Goblet of Fire. I will keep updates on my progress.  More anon.

Spring Break Homework

My family and I love to read the names of convenience stores along the highway when we travel out of town. If you notice an interesting name of a convenience store, please share it with me in the comments below. I want the city and state as well as the name of the business. Participation is voluntary. Ask your parents to help you with your listing; it keeps them awake as they drive for those long hours in the car. Thank you!

Example: Loaf ‘N Jug – Denver, Colorado

Stay the Course!

We are nearing the end of the fourth marking period.  Some students may be tempted to throw in the towel and say, “What does it matter?” It does matter. I have no rewards to offer but the satisfaction of a job well-done. I won’t be handing out a bunch of stickers, gift cards, etc. I do not put on a dog-and-pony show to entertain my students. I do expect my students to stay engaged. I expect them to bring their supplies to class, pay attention, write down their homework assignments in their agendas, tell me the truth even if it’s bad news, and continue the process of independence. This independence means more than deciding what outfit to wear, how to style one’s hair, or what to eat for breakfast. I expect them to stay the course–remain on the path of success by putting one foot in front of the other. Keep moving forward in the learning process.

Stay on Target

The bottom line is that I am interested in your success in life, not just in my classroom.
