Novel Tests

Pre-AP will have a novel test on Thursday, December 12, over Stargirl.  I sent a text message via Remind 101.  Please check your device.  We went over a quick review in class, but students need to study their chapter questions, vocabulary from the review, and look over the figurative languages handout on my reference page.  They are to recognize examples of figurative language when they see it.

On-level ILA will have a novel test over Fever 1793 on Monday, December 16. You are to read through chapter 27 tonight and complete the packet.  I’ll go over it tomorrow in class. Begin looking over your information so you don’t get behind on your studies.  I will see you tomorrow in class.  Be good.

Red Ribbon Week

On Thursday, you are encouraged to wear mismatched clothing for Red Ribbon week.  On Friday, please wear black and gold to show your Cougar spirit.

PAP had to read their SSR books tonight.  There is an assignment coming soon.  On-level ILA has a test on Friday.  Study carefully tonight and tomorrow night.

Class Notes – October 18, 2013

My ILA  and PAP ILA students wrote in response to a CBAP or curriculum-based-assessment prompt in class today.  They had the class period to work and had to use lined writing paper.  They will have the opportunity to revise the writing once it is scored.

My on-level ILA students were given a take-home quiz covering chapters 14-18 of Where the Red Fern Grows.  It is due on Monday, October 21.  The late work policy applies to this assessment.  They have a novel test on Friday, October 25.

PAP ILA has no homework this weekend other than to be good.

Next week is Red Ribbon Week!

Monday – wear red

Tuesday – wear a Hawaiian shirt

Wednesday – wear headbands, sports bands, wristbands, etc.

Thursday – wear mismatched clothing

Friday – wear Cougar spirit wear

Class Notes – October 16, 2013

We went to the library today and checked out books after doing some practice with library skills.  We also had time to read our library books in my two on-level classes.  They will have a novel test on Friday, October 25, over Where the Red Fern Grows.  We will pick up with reading the novel in class on Thursday.

PAP has a novel test over Walk Two Moons on Thursday, October 17.  Their travel journals/map activity is due on Friday, October 18, when they arrive.

Class Notes – September 16, 2013

We worked on the attached memory map assignment in class today.  Students were asked to brainstorm about an incident in their lives that caused them to change; in other words, they realized, discovered, or learned something new as a result.  I had them look at their life maps to choose an incident, we created a graphic organizer about the word incident, and then I had them brainstorm about the events that occurred at the beginning, middle, and end of the incident.  Some great ideas they could use include:  divorce and remarriage, move to a new location from familiar surroundings, a new pet and the challenges it presents, death of a pet who was a long-time family member, overcoming some significant health issue, testing for a black belt in martial arts, etc.  This is not the time to discuss a trip to Disneyland, Sea World, or even Six Flags because the trip does not bring about a change in the student’s life.  We can write about a favorite vacation spot another day in our journals.  This assignment will eventually become a personal narrative that they will write about how this incident changed them.

Supplies needed tomorrow include:  colored pencils and/or markers, pen, pencil, Springboard workbook with pages 16-17 completed.

They will have to include dialogue, commentary (explaining importance of the event), and a sentence that details the event in their completed memory map.  We will work on this in class tomorrow after the quiz.  My ILA classes will take a quiz over the first four chapters of Where the Red Fern Grows and IVAN CAPP.  My PAP ILA class will take a quiz over IVAN CAPP.  Please check your inbox for an email sent at the end of the school day, and let me know if you need to be added to my mailing list to receive my emails.
